MEET in Oxford Making EMDR & Energy Therapies more accessible in Oxford

Frequently asked questions

Why are you called MEET in Oxford?
MEET stands for ‘Making EMDR and Energy Therapies more available’ - these are the therapies we use in working with trauma. In the charity’s early days, all our appointments were in central Oxford but we now work largely online, with people who live anywhere in Oxfordshire.

Who do you work with?
We work with people who are living now with the effects of trauma. This may be due to a single traumatic event (such as an accident or sexual assault), or the result of repeated or enduring trauma (such as childhood or domestic abuse). You can find information about our other criteria on the Referral and Assessment page.

Can I have therapy with you if my difficulties are not associated with trauma?
MEET in Oxford’s purpose is to provide trauma-focused therapy. If, at your assessment appointment, the therapist feels that your difficulties are not trauma-related, they will suggest other services that may be more appropriate.

What do you mean by trauma?
Trauma can be the result of a single event, or a repeated or enduring event, but in either case it overwhelms the individual’s ability to cope. Symptoms can be debilitating and may include re-experiencing of the original trauma, panic attacks, anxiety and insomnia. Trauma therapy helps to process and make sense of the experience, so that it becomes part of who you are rather than defining you.

How do you help with trauma?
We use two approaches to working with trauma. You can find out more about these on Our Approaches page.

How is this different from talking therapy or counselling?
Both EMDR and Energy Psychotherapy facilitate healing through an understanding of the impact of trauma on the body, and they work with the mind-body connection. Talking about the traumatic events and memories forms a smaller part of the process than in other forms of therapy; it is not essential to share details of disturbing or traumatic events, or to relive the trauma.

Is everyone offered therapy after assessment?
No, this is not suitable for everyone. The assessment is an opportunity for both client and therapist to decide whether the approaches we offer are likely to help you, and whether you are ready to look back at the past. Trauma therapy can be hard work and if you are dealing with stressful or upsetting circumstances, or your life is not settled enough to attend regularly, this may not be the right time.

After assessment, how long will I have to wait for therapy?
If, after assessment, both you and the therapist think this will be beneficial, you will go on our waiting list. It may then be some months before we can offer you regular therapy appointments.

Do I need to decide which approach I want?
No, you can discuss this at your assessment appointment and express a preference for EMDR or Energy Therapy if you wish. If you don’t have a preference, we will just offer you the next available space.

How much does it cost?
We do not charge a fee. However, clients are asked to contribute whatever they can afford towards the cost of their therapy sessions. This may be £5 a session (or less), or £35. We do not treat people differently or offer therapy spaces on the basis of what you can afford to give. We do ask that you make any voluntary contributions you have agreed on a regular, usually weekly basis. These donations form an important part of our funding and enable us to continue to offer this very low-cost service to others.

What if I am using alcohol or drugs?
We expect that you will not attend therapy sessions under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs.

Do you offer evening appointments?
In general, all regular appointments are daytime. Rarely, an early evening appointment may be possible, but to go on our waiting list you need to have some weekday, daytime availability.
